Apples prevent asthma

A new study tracked the diets of nearly 2,000 pregnant women and checked the lung health of 1,253 of their children at age five. Among a wide variety of foods eaten and recorded by the pregnant women, only apple consumption showed a consistent protective effect against childhood wheeze and asthma.

Children of mothers who ate more than four apples per week were 37 per cent less likely to have a history of wheezing and 53 per cent less likely to have doctor-confirmed asthma, compared to mothers who ate one or no apples per week while pregnant. The specific association found with apples, and not with the total amount of fruits eaten or with citrus, fruit juice or vegetable consumption, hints at an apple-specific effect, possibly because of its unique flavonoids, which have been shown to have beneficial effects on adult lung function. To maximize apple’s benefits – why not think about adding apples to your daily juice regime.

Diet Foods Will Cause Obesity - not reduce it

Children eating diet foods instead of the full-calorie versions may lead to overeating and obesity when they grow up, according to a report from the University of Alberta, Canada.

In the study, young rats were fed either a regular diet or low-calorie substitutes. The low-calorie versions led the rats to overeat, whether they were lean or genetically predisposed to obesity. Adult rats, however, did not show the same tendency to overeat.

The researchers believe that diet foods with low calorie content disrupt the body’s ability to use taste to regulate caloric intake. This would explain why older animals did not overeat, as they, unlike the younger rats, were able to rely on taste-related cues to assess the energy value of their food correctly.

Lead researcher Professor David Pierce stated, “Based on what we’ve learned, it is better for children to eat healthy, well-balanced diets with sufficient calories for their daily activities rather than low-calorie snacks or meals.”

A diet based on living foods provides your child with the best foundation for health that you can provide.

Can I make oat milk?

Yes you certainly can! Oat milk is generally made from presoaked oat groats, which are the hulled grain broken into fragments. Use approximately ¾ cup of dry oat groats and soak them for 6-8 hours. Drain and rinse the groats before placing them in the filter cup. The filter cup should be approximately 2/3 full. You can also combine oats with other grains, beans or seeds such as soy, barley, rice, and almonds.

Oat milk is quite light and has a mild, slightly sweet taste, so it substitutes well for low-fat or skim milk. It can also be used in the same way as soymilk or rice milk. Oat milk is a wonderful choice for consumers looking for a milk that is fat and lactose free.

Allergies, Asthma and Anaphylaxis on the rise

It’s worth noting that the number of children under five affected by potentially dangerous and occasionally even fatal allergies to peanuts, eggs, milk and some other foods is rising fast, with new evidence suggesting the rate may have increased 12-fold since 1995.

The first Australian study to look at pediatric food allergy rates in children found the number of consultations for advice on the problem in children under five rose from 11 a year in 1995 to 138 a year by last year.

There was also a seven-fold increase over that time in the number of annual consultations for food anaphylaxis.

Do you think there could be a dietary connection?

UK Study: Food Additives & Kid’s Behaviour

Food Additives Linked to Children’s Behavioral Problems
In a new study scientists at the University of Southampton have found what they believe is a definitive link between artificial food additives and hyperactivity and restlessness in young children. The research was commissioned by Britain’s Food Standards Agency (FSA).

Researchers tested six popular artificial colorings; tartrazine (E102), ponceau 4R (E124), sunset yellow (E110), carmoisine (E122), quinoline yellow (E104), and allura red AC (E129) and one preservative, sodium benzoate. All of the tested chemicals were associated with some sort of medical risk, including hyperactivity, mood swings, asthma, allergic reactions, and intolerance. As a result numerous food-safety experts are urging parents to remove these substances from their children’s diets ……

Change your family’s health conditions - whole and raw foods are one answer.

Dental Hygiene & Cholesterol

Recently released research has suggested that a common ingredient in toothpaste and mouthwash, can cause high cholesterol and increase the risk of heart attack or stroke.

The research by the Centre for Ageing and the ANZAC Research Institute in Sydney, has found that that the flavourless additive, called Poloxamer-407 (P407), when given to mice, coated cells in the liver that control cholesterol levels, leading to a 10-fold increase in levels.

“There’s a danger to keeping your cholesterol high … this can lead to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) over time,” Dr Cogger said. This significantly increases the risk of heart attack, stroke or organ failure.

Have a look at the ingredients in the toothpaste in your bathroom. You might like to check out Vitality 4 Life’s oral care range – you can’t do better for your health.

Goji Berries

Some people have asked us if the growing methods for gogi berries are safe in China.  The Absolute Red goji berries are grown on a dedicated farm in the Ningxia Province in Northern China which complies with the ‘green certificate’. The next shipment of Absolute Red goji berries will be certified organic.

A quarter to half a cup full a day, ie. about a handful is good. You’ll probably find instinctively that you’ll stop eating them when you’ve had enough.

Oral Health

The importance of caring for our oral health – is  something that has been greatly underestimated. Think about it – if the first few inches of your intestinal tract isn’t healthy, how can the rest of it be?

For people with tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath – the Hydro Floss is worth checking out.  It cleans between teeth and deep into gum pockets, removing debris, plaque and other unwanted material utilizing a technique called hydro magnetics, which actually inhibits bacteria from adhering to the tooth surface.

Workout Vibration Platform

Join the vibration revolution.  It’s the latest fitness machine to take the sporting and celebrity world by storm.  Madonna reportedly used a vibration platform to hone her 48-year-old body into looking half its age for her last tour.
So how does it work?
The machines vibrate at between 30 and 50 times a second, which transfers energy to the body and triggers rapid muscle contractions. This means you work harder all over when you’re on it. In a 12-minute workout, you train every muscle in your body and contract them to the same degree each time.
Read how NASA is now working with vibration therapy to increase bone density in astronauts.  And also a study of 60 menopausal women with osteoporosis.

The latest vibration platform has no handles - so there is no interference with your workout or yoga poses. Register your interest with info@vitality4life.com

Can I soak my goji berries?

Soaking the goji berries is fine, it doesn’t effect them nutritionally it just makes them easier to eat. You can also drink the water they’ve been soaked in.

Trace Minerals Gone Missing

Unfortunately in today’s world, naturally occurring, nutrient-rich foods are becoming a thing of the past. Eons of vegetation growth and aggressive modern farming techniques have brought many of the earth’s minerals to the surface where they have been washed away to the oceans. To address this there is no better way than ConcenTrace Trace Minerals.

Letting Off Steam

How can you do this detox thing without it being such a drama all the time - emotionally and physically?  Get support!  That can take the form of a wonderful massage, a walk on the beach with a friend.  Says she….

Just had one of those irrational battles with a 5 year old that are so unwinnable.  So decided to take some time out -  & just dropped into Vitality4Life to take a moment in their Far Infrared sauna.  What a treat!  You don’t feel quite as though you are suffocating as you do in the normal saunas, its a gentler style, but they say that you sweat toxins out at a rate of 20% compared with 3% for a standard steam sauna….you can’t complain about that.

Plenty of water, a laugh and play with Kira and it is time to crash.

Welcome! - Detox

Kate at Nell’s

Hi and welcome to Detox.

We all are living such stressful lives and exposed to so many toxins and chemicals these days, as well as facing so many challenging health issues, that detoxing is a choice many are making as part of taking back control over our health.

Hi, my name is Kate, and we at Vitality4Life come across so much information about this subject – personal experiences, articles, resources, that we decided to put it all together in one place.

My background is as a yoga teacher, trained in the Japanese tradition. Part of the focus of my training was ‘food as medicine’ and nutrition. I am also a mother of a beautiful 5 year old girl who has just started at school. Being a parent you become so aware of how our health is being challenged. All last year I had to wash my hands to enter the preschool room because there were two anaphylactic children in my daughter’s class.

Kids are grappling with asthma, allergies, obesity, diabetes and other chronic conditions at alarming rates and it doesn’t have to be that way….

One of the simplest ways people start on a cleanse is to begin juicing. What is the benefit you ask? Well with a recommended daily dose of between 8 - 12 cups of raw fruit and vegetable, most of us cannot keep up the amount. So we are chronically depleted in the goodness we get from fruits and vegetables which leads to a whole range of immune system and hormonal issues. So juicing is a valuable way to increase your dosage of living foods. But then there are things we need to know about juicing…

Only last week I visited my friend, Sally who had decided to put herself on her regular 6 monthly cleanse. She was spending the weekend consuming only juices and water. On the Sunday I visited her. Sally was experiencing common cleanse symptoms – lethargy, claggy mouth, skin irritation. I went into the kitchen and there was a mound of wonderful looking vegetables and fruits. Then she started to juice…..and she was using a standard domestic centrifugal juicer which was noisy and churned out the juice. I didn’t have the heart to say that because of the electric motor and heat and speed generated, that the juicer was killing most of the enzymes in the juice – reducing greatly the cleanse benefit of the juice (I told her later when she was post-cleanse!).

I look forward to sharing this journey with you….
